Write on Wednesdays

Write On Wednesdays Exercise 6 – Status Anxiety: Log onto your Facebook/Twitter page and write down the first status update you see.  Set a timer for 5 minutes. Write the first words that come into your head after your prompt. Stop when the buzzer rings. Do this exercise over and over if you wish.
First Facebook status I saw: “Recently changed my morning coffee place, it’s now better, less busy and cheaper. Plus, I found out this morning I am getting a discount cause I bring my own cup. Screw you old coffee place with your stupid line ups, expensive coffee and cheesy shirts you wear on Fridays”
Kevin pushed open the office door pausing for just a moment and holding his KeepCup in front of him. A few of his coworkers rolled their eyes as he once again announced how he loved his KeepCup, it kept his coffee hotter longer, and the new place on the corner even charged him less for using it. Kevin is that kind of pain in the ass, environmentally and socially aware to the point that it seems a sickening game. Yesterday, he had spotted Kelly discard of a can of Diet Coke in the regular bin. Seeing this, and knowing that the office had paper and cardboard recyclables only, Kevin suggested Kelly could keep the can with her until such a time as she could get rid of it in an environmentally conscious manner.
Nudging the door open, Kevin looked at the eyes on him as he rummaged for his keys in his pocket, holding his coffee out in front so he had better access. He knew the people he worked with were wary of him. If only he could tell them. If only he could share. But, it was a secret. He had to remain quiet. He saw Kelly and winced in memory of the telling off he gave her yesterday. Dropping his bag next to his station he sighed heavily and to hold back the tears of a violent liar he reprimanded Jason, who worked opposite him, for merely logging out and not shutting down his computer overnight.
Thanks to The Designer for the use of his Facebook status.

  1. Oh, wow, what IS Kevin’s secret?? This felt very real, is this based on real life at all? There is definite suspense here, I was ready to read more.

Thanks for joining in again in W.o.W. It’s only 10.30pm here in WA so your post made it on Wednesday easily for me! Not that it matters, any day you can join in and post is fine.

    • You know what, I’m not even sure what Kevin’s secret is! It’s not especially based on real life but I did draw from real life traits. I think it surprised me when the story took that direction. As it was so late and I was so tired I stuck obediently to the 5 minute rule, then posted my story.
      Thanks Gill. x
